THANK YOU!

John has been my trainer for eight years and is the person I trust most with my health. He individualizes every session to my body and what I'm going through rather than running a canned routine, and his guidance on eating well plus his books have been wonderful resources for my whole family. Beyond all of that, he's simply a great person to be around.

STAY HYDRATED: STRATEGIES THAT WORK

Thirst is a late signal. By the time you feel it, you're dehydrated. A better strategy is to front-load your hydration: drink a full glass of water immediately upon waking, before coffee or food. Overnight, your body loses fluid through respiration and mild sweating, so morning is a natural deficit to address. This morning habit is one of the best hydration strategies.

GET SMARTER WITH EXERCISE

One of the primary ways exercise supports brain function is by increasing blood flow to the brain. When you engage in aerobic activities like walking, swimming, or cycling, your heart pumps more blood, delivering oxygen and essential nutrients to brain cells. This boost in circulation helps the brain function more efficiently, supporting clearer thinking, faster processing, and sharper memory.

EXERCISE IS THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

Aging is an inevitable part of life, but how you age is significantly influenced by the choices you make, especially when it comes to physical activity. While there’s no magic pill to stop time, regular exercise is the closest thing science has found to an anti-aging elixir. Breaking a sweat benefits you down to the cellular level and improves your quality of life.

EXERCISE AND CREATIVITY

At the most basic level, exercise increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, promoting the growth of new brain cells and improving overall brain function. This biological boost can lead to sharper thinking and better memory, but it also has a profound effect on creative thought. Studies have shown that moderate aerobic exercise—such as walking, jogging, or cycling—can increase divergent thinking and allows you to generate multiple solutions to a problem. This contrasts with convergent thinking, which seeks a single correct answer, divergent thinking is the heart of creativity.

HOW TO GET IN THE FLOW

Meditation also serves as a conduit for accessing the state of flow. Flow is a harmonious immersion in the present moment where time seems to stand still, and your work is effortless. Just think of an occasion when you lost track of time and performed well. Were you writing? Playing a round of golf? Delivering a presentation? You’ve been there. Through meditation, you navigate the flow with intention and grace.

BREATHING & MINDFUL FITNESS

Incorporating mindfulness into exercise and daily movement also involves the practice of breathing. The fact is most people don’t breathe very well. Each inhale should involve the expansion of your abdomen and rib cage in four directions: front, back, and laterally left and right. Try to inhale without raising your shoulders and exhale all the air out of your lungs before your next, slow inhale. Breathing with intention and attention grounds you in the present moment and enhances your physical experience. This mindful breathing not only fuels your movement but also cultivates a calm and focus that extends beyond the gym.

REIMAGINE YOUR WORKOUT

Would you agree with Einstein’s definition of insanity, which is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? If you have been following the same workout plan for longer than a couple of months and are still expecting a greater level of fitness, it is time to change. Your body adapts quickly and what initially challenged you is too easy now. It’s not just because you’re so awesome

FITNESS THROUGH THE AGES

My dad lived 81 very active years. Carpentry was his profession and he also spent his nights and weekends remodeling the homes we lived in when I was a boy. Later in life, the 14 acres he owned in East Tennessee required year-round maintenance and he took pride in doing it himself. His daily movement was the key to his good health. Despite the fact he ate too much of my mom’s cooking, an active lifestyle protected him from many of the ravages of time.

POSTURE PRIMER

Poor sitting posture also shortens the hip flexors, such as the psoas (that’s pronounced “so as,” with an emphasis on the so, as in my hips are soooo tight). A tight psoas inhibits the glutes, which allows for more pressure on the lower spine. When you do move away from your computer screen, a tight psoas will inhibit the stability of the pelvis and lower spine, so twisting to grab a piece of paper from the edge of your desk may leave you in “sudden” low back pain.

SLEEP MORE LIVE BETTER

The final thing when addressing quality sleep is to consider how you spend your waking hours. Even if you turn your phone off, sleep in a cool, dark room and maintain a consistent sleep schedule, high levels of stress will waylay your rest.

HIPS DON'T LIE

If your glorious glutes are working like they should, they are prime movers when it comes to things like walking, running and squatting. However, if you sit a lot or don’t use good form when moving around, they will be inhibited. The result is that the hamstrings try to compensate for your lazy glutes and end up tight, tight, tight.
